Watching over me

I was having a pretty rotten week to put it mildly, when I heard this song on the radio. It came on at the perfect time, just when I needed it. I realized that no matter what happens in my life, in the many situations I have no control over, I can control my own attitude and what I take from it. No matter what happens, someone is watching over me and giving me strength.

I always land on my feet and I will be okay. It's just something good to remember.

The Value of Friendship

Friend... I’ve learned over the past 28 years that it’s a tricky word with many meanings. So what is the  exact definition. Webster says a friend is... “a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection. A person who acts as a supporter of a cause, organization, or country by giving financial aid or help. A person who is not an enemy or who is on the same side. A familiar or helpful thing. (Often as a polite form of address or in ironic reference) an acquaintance or a stranger one comes across. Origin: Old English freond, of Germanic origin; related to Dutch vriend and German Freund, from an Indo-European root meaning ‘to love,’ shared by free.”
So what does this mean. A friend can either be someone whom you know well, is on your side, a supporter, and someone whom loves you or then can simply be someone you come across or have met. I guess the big question is what really makes a friend to an individual. Everyone must decide for themselves what a friendship means to them and what kind of friend they are willing to be.
Me personally would give just about anything for my friends. If they ever need something, I would be there. Day or night, sun or snow, rain or shine, even if it inconvenienced me. If there’s anyway possible I would drop what I could and be there for them. It’s like the song “Find out who you’re friends are.”
"Run your car off the side of the road
Get stuck in a ditch way out in the middle of nowhere
Get yourself in a bind lose the shirt off your back
Need a floor need a couch need a bus fare
This is where the rubber meets the road
This is where the cream is gonna rise
This is what you really didn't know
This is where the truth don't lie
{Chorus}
You find out who you're friends are
Somebody's gonna drop everything
Run out and crank up their car
Hit the gas get their fast
Never stop to think 'what's in it for me' or 'it's way too far'
They just show on up with their big old heart
You find out who you're friends are
Everybody wants to slap your back
wants to shake your hand
when you're up on top of that mountain
But let one of those rocks give way then you slide back down look up
and see who's around then
This ain't where the road comes to an end
This ain't where the bandwagon stops
This is just one of those times when
Alot of folks jump off
{Chorus}
When the water's high
When the weather's not so fair
When the well runs dry
Who's gonna be there
{Chorus}"
To me that’s what a friend is. Someone you can trust to always have your back, and no matter what have you’re best interest at heart. I know I too have let friends down, I’m not perfect, I’m fully willing to admit that. But at least I know what a friendship means to me. I’m a loyal friend, and easy to become friends with, but if you aren’t one back I’m also easy to lose and hard to get back. If you don’t want to be my kind of friend and would rather suck the life out of me with your selfishness and egotism then go find someone else to befriend, I would rather not waste my time and energy on something that never was important to you anyway.

All grown up!

Wow, I'm feeling just a little overwhelmed right now in my life. I remember back many years ago when I bought my first new car, and that was a HUGE commitment. I remember thinking "I'm taking on some serious responsibility here." I now realize, that was NOTHING. I mean car vs. house. That's like San Jose vs. Boise State in football. Talk about your no-brainer.
When I first started the whole house shopping thing I remember thinking, okay, I feel good about this, it's time to move on. And all of a sudden the time is here and the only thing on my mind is "Oh my goodness, what have I done now." This phrase as come up a multitude of times throughout my life. Such as when I moved to Hawaii for college, transferred to school in Utah, started nursing school, woke up in the MTC on a mission, later woke up in Ecuador on same mission, just outside the OR prior to surgery, in the LSAT testing room etc. And all of these things have ended up, to my knowledge anyway, being good things, or at least beneficial in some way to my life. I have regretted none of them. This is a similar situation. I am filled with emotion; excitement, nervousness, and a little scared. Okay the truth is I'm terrified, but this too shall pass. I just can't help getting the feeling it's now time to grow up. All though just like Peter Pan I would rather not. I'm sure in a few years something else will come along that makes buying a house comparative to San Jose in the above matchup.
Then maybe I'll decide to grow up.

Multiple Personalities Anyone???

Not to long ago I was getting ready for a date, trying to decide what to wear. At first I pulled out a nice button down shirt (the only one I own) and a pair of slacks (that I have worn maybe twice this entire year). After looking at them for a minute, I threw them aside, pulled out my camo-print cargo capris and a T-shirt. Which I adorned simply with a pair of flip-flops. After careful consideration, that became my outfit of choice to wear. Now I will admit that I am far from the latest fashionista. I definitely care more about comfort then style, but I don't feel I'm completely lacking in judgement either. My final choice was determined by my desire to simply "be myself". I figure if a guy is going to like me, I want him to like the me he will see everyday, not the person I pretend to be so that I can get a second date. I had a friend tell me however that I was wrong, if I "pretend" to be someone else, apparently that person is me too. Because obviously it's always you, you don't become a different person just because you look and act different. Now, I agree with that which leads me to my point. Most people in this world must have multiple personalities. Since they are one person at work, someone else at home, entirely different at church, they go out clubbing as their alter-ego. It's really hard to keep it all straight...sometimes I wonder if even they can. So why can't people just figure out what they like, who they want to be, and be that person. People will either like you or not, but at least you will like you and the rest isn't your concern. And if you don't like yourself maybe you should do something about it. But that's an entirely different can of worms.

The blogging begins!

After years of avoiding the blog I decided that maybe it could be a productive thing after all. So here is my attempt. Let's see how well it goes. Most of the blogging will be a chronicle of my life, thoughts, and whatever else I feel the urgent desire to express.
